Anne-Catrin Uhlemann is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) in New York City, where she also directs the Microbiome & Pathogen Genomics Core. She received her MD from the University of Tubingen, Germany, and PhD in Molecular Parasitology from the University of London, where she studied mechanisms of drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum. She then completed her residency training in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at CUIMC in 2010. Her research leverages genomic tools and seeks to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and evolutionary underpinnings of drug-resistant microorganisms, spanning Staphylococcus aureus and diverse carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). This includes studies on how CRE establish colonization in the gut microbiome and progress to cause infections in immunocompromised hosts as well as investigations into mechanisms of resistance to last line antibiotics to combat CRE infections such as polymyxins and novel carbapenemase inhibitors.
