Joe Sexton is a Microbiologist and Team Lead for the Mycotic Diseases Branch Laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this role, Joe leads MDB's laboratory efforts to prevent fungal disease and death through outbreak investigations, surveillance activities, reference testing and applied research. Joe has dedicated specific focus toward advancing capacity to detect and control Candida auris, an emerging and highly transmissible fungal pathogen with high rates of antimicrobial resistance. This work includes building laboratory capacity through the AR Lab Network, advancing diagnostics, leading collaborative studies to better understand colonization, transmission and environmental contamination, and working within CDC and with parter agencies to build public health guidance around the best available science.
